چکیده

The approach is to obtain measurements that will permit comparisons of temporal evolution of bottom stress, suspended particle size, and optical and acoustical properties in the bottom boundary layer. The instrumentation is mounted on bottom tripods and an I-beam frame. The “OASIS” tripod includes a 9wavelength optical attenuation and absorption meter (WetLabs ac-9, with automated dissolved measurement for calibration-independent particulate measurements), LISST-100 (Type B) and LISSTFloc laser diffraction particle sizers (Agrawal & Pottsmith 2000), a digital floc camera (DFC) (Curran et al. 2002), a Tracor Acoustic Profiling System (TAPS), and an array of SonTek/YSI acoustic Doppler

Near-Bottom Turbulence and Sediment Resuspension Induced by Nonlinear Internal Waves

The long term goal of this work is to develop a fundamental understanding and predictive capability of the underlying physics of the interaction of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) with the continental shelf seafloor over a broad range of environmental conditions. We are particularly interested in how such interactions impact underwater optics and acoustics and shelf energetics and ecology by s...

Upwelling source depth in the presence of nearshore wind stress curl

[1] The influence of nearshore wind stress curl on the relative partitioning of bottom boundary layer (BBL) and interior transport within an idealized, two-dimensional coastal upwelling system is studied theoretically and using a numerical model. A nearshore reduction in upwelling favorable wind stress amplitude (1) reduces the width of the inner shelf, (2) reduces the local wind-driven Ekman t...

Observations of Boundary Mixing Over the Continental Slope

Towed-body observations of mixing over the continental slope reveal the great lateral extent (several km) of continuously turbulent fluid within a few hundred meters of the boundary at 1600 m depth. The largest turbulent dissipation rates were observed over a 5 km horizontal region near a slope critical to the M2 internal tide. Averaged over a submarine landslide oriented perpendicularly to the...

Resuspension during Storms: Deployment of Gliders as Part of the ONR-OASIS Effort and a Retrospective Analysis

Characterizing in situ water turbidity is critical to numerous naval operations. In particular, water column turbidity impacts the efficacy of sensors that use optical measurements for a variety of purposes including laser detection of mines and prediction of the operational detection horizon for bioluminescence and diver visibility algorithms. Nepheloid layers, are optically significant and re...
